A Spiritual Journey to the Himalayas Kedarnath Dham

Uttarakhand is known as a dev bhoomi, or god's land. It is home to a multitude of temples that date back thousands of years. The most popular among tourists are the temples in the four places of badarinath, kedarnath, gangotri, and yamunotri, collectively known as char dham.

The kedarnath temple is the main attraction of the town and nagar panchayat of kedarnath, which is located in the rudraprayag district of uttarakhand. Kedarnath dham, located in uttarakhand's rudraprayag area, is one of the most important shiva pilgrimage sites. Rudraprayag, the district headquarters, is about 86 kilometers away. As part of the char dham trip, pilgrims from all across india and the world visit the sites.

Kedarnath Dham

The name of lord shiva seems to reverberate through the air among the mighty snow-clad peaks, lovely meadows, and forests of the himalayan lower mountain range. Kedarnath dham, at a height of 3,584 meters near the mandakini river's sources, recalls lord shiva's splendour.

The most remote of the four chota char dham pilgrimage locations is kedarnath. The char dham trip is very important and sacred in hindu faith. Every hindu is supposed to make the char dham trip at least once in their lifetime in order to gain the blessings of the gods who adorn the shrines.

The temple is inaccessible by road and must be accessed by a 22-kilometer (14-mile) uphill climb from gaurikund. The temple can be reached by pony, mule, or manchan. According to hindu traditions, the pandavas erected the temple, which is one of the twelve jyotirlingas, or shiva's holiest hindu shrines.

By performing penance in kedarnath, the pandavas were said to have delighted shiva. The pandavas erected the original kedarnath mandir (temple), and adi shankaracharya built the current temple. Just below the temple lies adi shankaracharya's samadhi.

The historical name of this location is "Kedar khand," and tradition has it that after defeating the kauravas, the pandavas felt bad about killing so many people and sought lord shiva's forgiveness. The lord constantly eluded them and took refuge at kedarnath in the guise of a bull.

The lord dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface at kedarnath. The remaining portions of lord shiva manifested in four different places and are worshiped as his manifestations.

Visitors can touch idle and perform abhishek with ghee before 3 P.M. After 5 P.M., no one can approach idle, but they can get darshan from a distance. The temple at kedarnath is only open six months of the year, when the sun enters aries and scorpio is in full eclipse.

Kedarnath temple's opening date is determined by the auspicious days of 'akshay tritya' and 'maha shiva ratri,' as calculated by omkareshwar priests.

Due to harsh cold weather and significant snowfall, the kedarnath temple remains closed for six months during the winter season.
